Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Thursday 21.03.2024

Danger level 1 - Low avalanche danger

Published:
In the high alpine, wind slabs can be triggered on isolated slopes. If the suns peeps through the coulds, small wet loose avalanches could occur. Safe travel conditions are expected on many slopes.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches are relatively harmless to people, but can knock you off balance. Can be dangerous close to terrain traps. (size 1)

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Wednesday 20. March 2024

Mest snø i lesider. Den gamle snøpakken er stabil. Under tregrensa fuktig/vått snødekke.

Mountain weather

Thursday 21. March 2024

1-5 mm precipitation. Rain up to 400 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from southwest. -2 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
